StGallen Integrated imt Business School

Management Valley St. Gallen of St. Gallen city, nestled between the two hill ranges of Rosenberg and Freudenberg, was the center of the global embroidery industry until the WW I and in the course of the growth of the economy and the city due to the embroidery boom, on May 25, 1898 the Great Council of the Canton of St. Gallen decided to found what was then the Commercial Academy (later Commercial College, Hochschule St. Gallen and today's University of St. Gallen).

StGallen Integrated imt Business School is proud to be part of continuing the so-called approaches of the St. Gallen School, initiated by the work of Prof. Dr Hans Ulrich and Prof. Dr. Knut Bleicher called The “St. Gallen Management Model”, aka "St. Gallen Management Concept".

Prof. Dr. Hans Ulrich, the founder of the St. Gallen Institute of Business Administration (IfB) and the driving force behind the transformation of the former "Hochschule St. Gallen (HSG)" into a university and later called "University of St. Gallen", dealt intensively with the requirements of modern management theory in his research.  The “St. Gallen Management Model”, first described in 1968 in his work “The company as a productive social system”, offered a frame of reference, which focuses on multidimensional leadership and an integrated approach to management. The key element of the approach is perceiving organizations from a systems perspective, where company elements and economic objects are interacting dynamically in complex and constantly changing environments.

The model was constantly developed and updated considering changing world environments and technologies during the last 50 years. Ulrich's successor in St. Gallen, Professor Knut Bleicher, continued his work and focused on practical implementation, moreover he deepened the St. Gallen approach in 1991 in his standard work "The Concept of Integrated Management". Knut Bleicher's goal was to go beyond Ulrich's St. Gallen Management Model to provide today's executives with a concept as a guiding principle for their continuous reflections to be able to think through essential management problems in a structured holistic way.

In his “Integrated Management Concept”, Bleicher shows which adjustments allow at least to unravel the interdependencies of the social system “company”. In doing so he refers to the insights of Hans Ulrich and develops a timeless, flexible model to respond to a world that is becoming more and more complex. The 8th edition of his work, published in 2011, which is referring to that and includes an additional new chapter on the practical implementation by Christian Abegglen, co-founder and Managing Director of the St. Gallen Business School at this time.

In the 9th edition, published in July 2017 under the editorship of Christian Abegglen, particular attention was paid to the topic of putting the concept into practice and questions modern leadership in digital times. The so-called knowledge navigator, developed by Christian Abegglen, helps supports the application, reference, cross-reading and implementation from theory to practice. In the 10th edition, again under the authorship of Prof. Dr. Christian Abegglen (published in 2021), the St. Gallen Management HAUS was introduced as a more practical structure for the successful application of integrated corporate management. Moreover, a completely additional new chapter about operational management helps to support the implementation of new strategies.

Nowadays, in an increasing dynamic complexity of business environments, especially linked to global supply chains, big data management, further business digitalization, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc., the St. Gallen Management Concept is becoming even more relevant, but also requires a more dynamic further development. Therefore, 50 years after the “St. Gallen Management Model” has been introduced, and after 30 years since the St. Gallen Business School has been established, in order to elevate the model to the next level by stressing the importance of interconnecting management and technology, there is a need to rebuild a more information and technology driven St. Gallen School and put it into new frames. So StGallen Integrated imt Business School is the institution to follow the heritage of the so-called “St. Gallen Management Approaches" and bring it to a next level.

The rebuilding and rebranding also require institutional change to enable the school to serve as an integration platform for coexisting private business schools, technical colleges, consulting companies, management centers and other institutions associated around St Gallen University - the vision of Hans Ulrich of building a "Management Valley” became reality.
